Day 3: Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Day 3 of 6 day Southern Colorado road trip. Day 3 was the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We were at the Visitor Center and South Rim at noonish. We had read this was a good time to visit as the sun illuminates all the way down into the canyon. We hiked the Oak Loop Trail but we know our limits and didn’t hike down to the river. In the afternoon, we took scenic highway 92 to the North Rim. By the time we got there the shadows were hitting the canyon giving us another entirely different view of the canyon and giving Black Canyon its name. The road on the north side is unpaved but don’t let that scare you off, it is hard pack, smooth dirt, regular cars would have no problem. If you are a camper, the campsites on the north rim are very lovely with excellent views of the rim.
